Trees for Schools - Woodland Trust

It's seemingly been raining nonstop this week so Year 4 took a rare sunny spell to plant some of the trees that were donated by the Woodland Trust.

To create a hedgerow between the school at the park, we mainly planted hawthorn but we also planted some crab apple, dog rose and hazel.

We decided to plant the trees using the 'slit method' as we needed to be quick because the rain was coming back and it was almost the end of the school day.

Buddleja davidii Plant - Camberwell Beauty

Today, to attract more wildlife to our school grounds, we planted a Buddleja Davidii. Called the 'Camberwell Beauty', its fragrant purple flowers will attract bees and butterflies throughout June, July and August.

Planting cauliflower seeds.

Today, at Eco Club we planted some cauliflower seeds. They were tiny. It's amazing to think that something as big and as tasty as a cauliflower will grow from them!

We will keep them indoors for 4 to 5 weeks until they are big enough to plant outside.

When we harvest the, Mr. Crone says he will show us how to make his 'famous pickled cauliflower'!

Chicken & Strawberries...

Or ECO Club has started again this term with some new members. This week, we cleaned out the chickens, cleared the path of leaves and, in the African Garden,  planted some strawberry plants that were bought from the ‘bargain bin’ at the local garden centre. We didn't like to think  that they would go to waste!

Naturally, the chickens came to see what was going on…

Year 4 Science - All Living Things

This week, 4C and 4M used the Sculpture Garden in their Science lesson. They plan to ‘construct classification keys to assign living things to different groups’ but first they had to collect mini-beasts so they could learn to ‘identify & name a variety of living things (plants & animals) in the local environment’.

Take a look at some of the creatures they collected. Do you know what they all are?

Chicken holiday...

Chicken News! The two new hens are enjoying their summer holiday in Mr. Crone’s vegetable plot!

After a tentative couple of weeks where the old and new chicken got used to each other, the pecking order has been established… they are now best of friends and make a happy flock!

The new chickens are laying delicious blue and white eggs!
